ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Monday disqualified Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) lawmaker in the National Assembly Sumaira Malik for possessing fake degree and directed the Election Commission of Pakistan to take necessary action in this regard.

A three-member bench of apex court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and comprising Justice Jawwad S Khawaja and Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed announced the verdict reserved on October 09, 2013 and furthermore instructed the election commission to take necessary action in this regard.

The court issued the ruling against the lawmaker and suspended the March 2008 notification announcing Sumaira Malik’s victory from NA-69 constituency in Khushab.

Sumaira Malik had been elected from constituency NA-69 of Khushab district in Punjab on PML-N ticket in 2008 general elections.

Her victory was challenged in the apex court by rival candidate Malik Umar Aslam Awan who had alleged that the lawmaker done her intermediate in 1981 and in order to avoid her ineligibility, had managed to obtain a fake BA degree from the University of Punjab.
