Number of polio cases detected in 2014 reaches 59

PESHAWAR: The number of polio cases detected in the country during the current year has reached 59 after a 14-month old child was diagnosed with the polio virus in Miranshah area of North Waziristan, media reported on Friday.

In a statement, the prime minister’s polio monitoring cell confirmed the detection of the latest case.

Since 2012, no polio team has visited North Waziristan tribal region as the government has discontinued anti-polio campaign in the region owing to security concerns following attacks on several polio teams by militants.
