KARACHI: Chief of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Altaf Hussain on Tuesday called upon Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to hand over administrative affairs of Karachi to army in order to root out the violence and terrorism.

“The Sindh government has completely failed in protecting citizens especially the trader community from gang-war Lyari elements, extortionists and terrorist of Lyari,” said Altaf Hussain in a statement from London.

“The police, law-enforcement agencies, Sindh government and city administration of Karachi seems non-existent in violence-hit areas of Karachi despite loss of lives and public properties,” Altaf said.

He said that the PM should issue directives for handing over administrative affairs of the city to military to ensure the protection of traders. “The oppressed people and traders of Karachi are now looking towards the army as a last hope.”

The MQM chief vehemently condemned bomb and rocket attacks against Lyari’s Katchi community which left the area following the violence and migrated to Sindh. However, hundreds of Katchi people returned on Monday.

Violence continued in the restive Lyari where firing incidents left nearly 15 people including women as two more bodies were also recovered from one of the oldest localities of Karachi.
