LAHORE: Justice Nasirul Mulk took oath as acting Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of Pakistan at a ceremony held at Supreme Court’s Lahore registry on Saturday.

The Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry administered the oath to Justice Nasirul Mulk.

Justice Nasirul Mulk was nominated as acting CEC by the chief justice on Friday till the time the new chief election commissioner is appointed. His appointed came after Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani relinquished the charge of acting CEC after being appointed as the chief justice of Pakistan from December 12.

Following the resignation of Justice Jillani as acting CEC, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had sent a summary to the Supreme Court of Pakistan to appoint new acting chief election commissioner.

Justice Jillani had been holding the post of acting CEC since August 17 after Justice (retd) Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim resigned from the post apparently in reaction to a decision by the apex court about rescheduling of the presidential election.
