Partial strike in parts of KPK on opposition’s call

PESHAWAR, Pakistan: The tripartite alliance of opposition parties in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has refused to call back its strike for Wednesday despite the request made by the provincial government.

The opposition alliance which includes Awami National Party (ANP), Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has announced rallies and shutter down strikes across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from June 10 against the alleged rigging in recently held local bodies elections.

With an aim to convince to opposition to remove their reservations regarding the alleged rigging in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa local government elections held on May 30, the Chief Minister Pervez Khattak convened an all parties’ conference in Peshawar on Tuesday.

The conference was attended by Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), Awami Jamhoori Ittehad Pakistan (AJIP) and Qaumi Wattan Party (QWP) but the tripartite opposition alliance boycotted that.

It was agreed in the conference that a judicial commission will be formed to probe the allegations regarding rigging in the polls. However, the opposition alliance rejected constitution of the judicial commission and insisted that it will go ahead with its shutter down strike plan from Wednesday till the resignation of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-led provincial government and re-election in the province.

The sources said that partial strike is being observed in Peshawar today as traffic can be seen plying on roads.

According to TASS news Agency, Nebenzya said that Moscow will continue to call for an end to violence against Palestinians and will not allow the US to muzzle the UN Security Council as Washington seeks to support Israel's operation in Gaza. "We will continue to stand firmly for ending violence against the Palestinians. Without a shadow of a doubt, we will continue to expose the abuses and sanctimony with which the US is handling the situation.
