Voting continues in GB legislative assembly polls

GILGIT, Pakistan: The polling concluded on Monday to elect 24 new members of the Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly amid tight security arrangements.

The voting which began at 08:00 am continued till 04:00 pm without any break.

Some 272 candidates affiliated with different political parties were in the field for 24 legislative assembly seats.

A total of 1,151 polling stations had been set up in all seven districts including Skardu, Diamer, Gilgit, Hunza Nagar, Ghizer, Ganche and Astor by the Election Commission to allow 618,324 registered voters to use their right to franchise.

The total registered voters in the region included 329,475 males and 288,889 females.

The Election Commission had declared 205 polling stations as very sensitive while 152 as sensitive.

Meanwhile in order to maintain law and order during the polling, contingents of Pakistan Army, Rangers, police and Gilgit-Baltistan scouts had been deployed in all the districts

The Pakistan Army will remain deployed in Gilgit-Baltistan till Thursday to ensure peace and tranquility.

The Gilgit-Baltistan government has declared public holidays for today and tomorrow on the occasion of polls.
