Nawaz Sharif to attend London Conference on Afghanistan

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will attend the London Conference on Afghanistan being held on December 4, co-hosted by the governments of the UK and Afghanistan, the Foreign Office said on Tuesday.

The conference will provide a platform for the Afghan government to set out its vision for reform and for the international community to demonstrate enduring solidarity and support for Afghanistan.

In a statement, the Foreign Office said that the British Prime Minister David Cameron had telephoned his Pakistani counterpart on October 28 and invited him to participate in the conference.

President Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai and the Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah would attend the conference from Afghanistan.

During the visit, Sharif would have bilateral interaction with the British leadership and hold meeting with the World Bank officials.

The British prime minister would host a breakfast meeting which would be attended by the Pakistani premier and the Afghan leadership.

A bilateral meeting between Nawaz Shari and the US Secretary of State John Kerry is also scheduled.

“The prime minister’s participation in the London Conference is a reflection of the importance that Pakistan attaches to international efforts for peace, stability and economic development in Afghanistan,” the Foreign Office said.

“Pakistan has consistently underscored the imperative of deeper engagement of the international community with Afghanistan on the economic plane to reinforce the efforts for peace and stability,” it added.

"We will continue to stand firmly for ending violence against the Palestinians. Without a shadow of a doubt, we will continue to expose the abuses and sanctimony with which the US is handling the situation.
