Three-day anti-polio drive kicks off across country

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: A three-day anti-polio campaign began on Monday across the country, during which 34.1 million children up to the age of five years will be administered polio drops, the ministry of national health services said.

In Sindh, more than 6,000 teams will administer polio drops for some 8.8 million children across the province, according to the executive district officer (EDO) health.

The EDO health said that a total of 2.26 million children in Karachi will be targeted during the massive campaign.

The total number of polio cases reported in Pakistan this year has reached 174. The reports said that 121 polio cases emerged in the volatile federally administered tribal areas (FATA), 31 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 15 in Sindh, five in Balochistan and two in Punjab.

In May, the Worth Health Organization (WHO) imposed strict travel restrictions on Pakistan due to increasing cases of polio in the country, making it mandatory for Pakistani citizens to carry a polio vaccination certificate during foreign travel.
