Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani sworn in as new Chief Justice

ISLAMABAD: Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani has been sworn in as 21st the Chief of Justice of Pakistan on Tuesday, a day after Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry retired after serving eight years as Chief Justice of Pakistan.

President Mamnoon Hussain administered the oath of office to Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani at a ceremony at Aiwan-e-Sadr in Islamabad.

The oath-taking ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, former CJP Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, federal ministers, Supreme Court judges, parliamentarians and other high-ups were also present in the ceremony.

Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani will remain the Chief Justice of Pakistan for seven months and will retire on July 6, 2014 after attaining the age of superannuation.

The new Chief Justice Jillani did his bachelor from Government Emerson College Multan and obtained a degree in M.A. Political Science from Forman Christian College and subsequently a graduate degree in Law from the University of the Punjab.

Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani received ‘Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters’ from Southern Virginia University in a special convocation in 2007. He also completed a course in Constitutional Law from the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies at the University of London.

He started practice at District Courts‚ Multan in 1974. He was elected General Secretary of District Bar Association Multan in 1976 and in 1978‚ was elected Member of the Punjab Bar Council.

In 1993‚ he was appointed as Advocate General of Punjab.

Justice Jillani was elevated as a Judge of Lahore High Court on August 7‚ 1994. He was elevated as Judge Supreme Court of Pakistan on July 31‚ 2004.

Before his appointment as the Chief Justice of Pakistan‚ Justice Tassaduq was serving as the Acting Chief Election Commissioner.
