PoliticsSC withdraws contempt of court notice against Imran Khan

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Wednesday withdrawn contempt of court notice against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan.

A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali discharged the notice after hearing the arguments of Attorney General Munir A Malik in the case who said that it is not the matter of disobedience.

During today’s hearing, the bench expressed dissatisfaction regarding the detailed written reply submitted by Imran Khan on Tuesday in contempt of court case.

In response to Imran’s written reply, Justice Anwar stated that the word ‘shameful’ is offensive if referred to the judiciary, however a better meaning of the term can be provided by the defendant party.

“The court will review the meaning of the word ‘shameful’, if Imran Khan does not apologise,” says Justice Ejaz.

The Justice Ejaz Chaudhry said the term “shameful” is abusive if used against the judiciary.

Imran’s prosecutor Hamid Khan explicitly mentioned that the word ‘shameful’ was used for the presiding officers functioning in May 11 elections and not for the judiciary.

Later talking to media persons‚ Imran Khan said that he believes in an independent judiciary and his comments were not meant against the top institution.

The PTI chief again demanded detailed investigation into election rigging in four constituencies and said that the role of Returning Officers should be made transparent.

On July 31, the Supreme Court issued a notice to the PTI chief over his critical and derogatory remarks against the judiciary and judges of the apex court. It said that Imran Khan apparently had tried to incite hatred against the apex court in one of his interactions with the media.
