New local government law for Punjab challenged in LHC

LAHORE: A petition was filed in the Lahore High Court on Saturday challenging the new local government law for Punjab, recently passed by the provincial assembly.

The petitioner argued that article 140-A of the Constitution was being violated as under the new local government system for the province municipal elections would be held on non-party basis.

According to the article 140-A, each province must establish a government system and delegate administrative, financial and political responsibility to the elected representatives of the local government.

The article also goes on to the say that elections of the local government will be held by the Election Commission of Pakistan.

The petitioner has thus pleaded with the court to order all local body elections in Punjab to be based on party lines.
