ISLAMABAD: The www.queerpk.com, the country’s first website, designed to help members of Pakistan’s homosexual and transgender community socialise and share experiences has been shut by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), the website said on Thursday.

The website was launched in July, a move hailed as a step forward for the long-silent community of the country.

“The government would ban anything that is progressive and talks about the rights of minorities,” the website said in an emailed statement. “The government does such things to appease the extreme-right all the time.”

On the other hand, a spokesman for the PTA, Kamran Ali, said they had halted access to the site after complaints from Internet users.

“We blocked the website under the law because its content was against Islam and norms of Pakistani society,” the spokesman said.
