SocialSteps to protect & conserve archaeological, heritage sites in KPK

PESHAWAR, Pakistan: Taking another initiative to protect and conserve the archaeological and heritage sites, the Department of Archaeology and Museums Govt of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Friday approved the establishment of an Archaeological Conservation Laboratory in the province.

This is the first of its kind in Pakistan and the Directorate of Archaeology & Museums becomes a trendsetter by introducing such a unique project.

The lab will be located at Hund Swabi and the total cost of the scheme is Rs 40 million, which will be completed in less than a year, which also includes installation of machinery and other equipment along with procurement of conservation material, chemicals etc.

In future the lab will also extend services to Archaeology departments of other provinces, which can generate income and lead to sustainability of the project.

Establishment of this lab is the need of the hour and will greatly help in preserving valuable antiquities already on display in various museums, lying in reserve collection and also to recover during archaeological excavations.

The laboratory will also help in preserving valuable antiquities, which will be recovered/excavated from the new sites. It will also provide job training opportunities to the staff of the directorate as well as other sister departments and organisations in enhancing their theoretical and practical skills/technical know-how in the field of conservation of antiquities.
