International Democracy Day today

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The International Democracy Day is being observed across the world on Monday.

The theme for this year’s democracy day is ‘Engaging Young People on Democracy’. It highlights the challenges and opportunities of young people engaging in democratic processes.

In a resolution in 2007, the United Nations General Assembly encouraged governments to strengthen national programmes devoted to the promotion and consolidation of democracy, and also decided that September 15 of each year should be observed as the International Day of Democracy.

The United Nations says that democracy is a universal value based on the freely-expressed will of the people to determine their political, economic, social and cultural systems and ensure their full participation in different spheres of life.
