WASHINGTON: The United States has said that it welcomes Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s resolve to solve all disputes with India peacefully for the economic uplift of the people.

The comments came in response to a letter from Pakistani premier to his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi in which Sharif said he was looking forward to work with the newly-elected Indian prime minister in harmony to resolve all unsettled issues for the benefit of both nations through dialogue.

“I look forward to working with you in harmony on all unsettled matters for the benefit of both nations. Hope that our endeavours will lay the foundation of a much brighter future,” Sharif said in the letter.

In a statement, the US State Department Spokesperson Jen Psaki underscored the need for the two countries to settle matters in harmony for the common economic well-being of the two nations.

“We believe dialogue is an important step in the process between India and Pakistan and we certainly encourage (that),” Psaki said.
