ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) – whose own past is filled with anti-establishment venom and uttering slur against the top judiciary – continues to instigate Pakistan Army to further tighten its noose against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) – PML-N’s biggest political rival – for securing a smooth sailing in the upcoming general elections?

In a Press Conference on Tuesday, the PML-N leader Mian Javed Latif remarked that if incidents occurring on 9th and 10th May 2023 weren’t tantamount to a crime, the Constitution of Pakistan must be altered or revoked.

“What work did the PTI Founder Chairman (Imran Khan) did in four years in power that his facilitation continues even today?,” Javed Latif questioned.

It’s worth noting that Mian Javed Latif himself was once booked and arrested in April 2021 on charges of treason and inciting people against state institutions. He is also infamous for hurling extremely derogatory remarks against female family members of PTI leaders.

In an unprecedented manner, PML-N has already been enjoying an all-out support from the ‘powerful circles’ since early 2022; rather in fact the latter again tilted their tendencies towards PML-N and its once arch-rivals PPP just months after PTI took over for the first time in August 2018 as according to the PML-N senior leader Khawaja Asif, the former Army Chief General (retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa had approached them to topple Imran Khan’s governments in Punjab and Centre just after eight months of his swearing-in.

Soon after the PTI government was removed through a No-Trust Motion triggered by ‘unconstitutional’ horse-trading and transferring allies’ loyalties to the PDM, Imran Khan’s party was subjected to an unprecedented crackdown.

Even, defying the Constitution, elections were not conducted in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa within 90 days, fearing it would pave the way for PTI to return to power.

In the meantime, both PML-N and PPP enjoyed power for another 16-month term, cleansing themselves from corruption cases but leaving the Country’s economy on the verge of bankruptcy & also masses at the mercy of an all-time high inflation.

Mian Javed Latif reiterating demands to the ‘powerful circles’ of further purging PTI especially its Founder Chaimran Imran Khan in the pretext of 9th May incidents clearly demonstrates how PML-N are concerned and desperate to run in February 8 elections all alone.

Bear in mind that PTI’s nightmare had already begun much before the 9th May 2023. The party wasn’t allowed to hold a long march in mid-2022, and they faced arrests, tear gas shelling & baton charge, house raids, police violence, and road blockages. Even the Red Zone area of Islamabad was stretched to the Zero point depriving PTI’s workers of exercising their Constitutional right but at the same time, PML-N and JUI-F workers were allowed to barge into the Red Zone and stage a protest outside the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) though Section 144 was in place.

Facing nearly 200 cases, Imran Khan’s own residence at Zaman Park in Lahore was attacked in March 2023 and remained under siege for days. It was also alleged that Zaman Park residence had become a safe haven for terrorists but all turned out to be fabricated stories and part of malicious propaganda in the end. In fact, the 9th May saga also requires a thorough and independent probe to ascertain the real culprits fueling and committing those reprehensible incidents. Initially, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) was attacked, ransacked, lawyers were injured, and Imran Khan was dragged into custody by paramilitary forces. The Supreme Court of Pakistan pronounced the arrest of Imran Khan as ‘illegal’ and ordered his release. Later following the violent incidents on 9th and 10th May, what continues to happen throughout the Country till now remains questionable. Because targeting an entire political party without any discrimination, acquitting only those party’s leaders labeling Imran Khan as the mastermind and parting ways with PTI, and ensuring that the forced defectors join newly formed Jahangir Tareen’s IPP and PTI-P of Pervez Khattak mar the authenticity of the entire episode & coupled accusations against PTI, and also raise severe doubts over the credibility of the ‘hidden’ investigation.
