Government of PakistanChief Operations Officer of VEON meets Prime Minister Imran Khan

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Chief Operations Officer (COO) VEON/Jazz Sergi Herrero along with a delegation met Prime Minister Imran Khan in Islamabad on Wednesday.

The Chairman Board of Investment (BOI) Syed Zubair Haider Gillani and the Head of the Prime Minister’s Digital Pakistan Vision Campaign Ms Tania Aidrus was also present in the meeting.

Earlier in a statement this month, the VEON COO Sergi Herrero said that “Pakistan is an amazing market wherein over 200 million people are living with a very young demographic. Smart phone ownership is growing double-digit year after year. But there is a lack of financial inclusion and financial services.

The people still need to go to the big cities and spend hours in queues to open a bank account. We are going to leapfrog that process and allow the people to open an account directly from their mobile phone. From your home or your place of work simply by supplying a photo and some ID. And then you are up-and-running, you can send money to relatives, pay some bills or even pay merchants for food other services.

We are doing it in a way that is API friendly so that merchants and third parties will be able to connect with us, plug their services and create a very rich and dynamic eco system. These things will help power the transformation that is already going in Pakistan.”
