NEW DELHI: Sarabjit Singh, an Indian prisoner convicted for his alleged involvement in a series of bombings in Lahore and Faisalabad that killed 14 people, was an agent of Indian intelligence agency RAW which launched a number of secret missions in Pakistan in 1990s to destabilize it, a former Indian intelligence officer acknowledged.

The officer told Indian media that the spy Sarabjit was sent to Pakistan in 1990s on a special secret mission.

Sarabjit had completed his task but was arrested by the Pakistani authorities when returning back to India, he said.

The 49-year-old Sarabjit Singh, who was sentenced to death 16 years ago on espionage charges, died in Lahore’s Jinnah Hospital on late Wednesday night after lying in a comatose state for the last five days.

Singh went into a coma after suffering multiple serious injuries when six prisoners attacked him on April 26 at Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail, hitting him on the head with bricks and fracturing his skull.
