Foreign OfficeNuclear materials must never fall into wrong hands: Tariq Fatemi

WASHINGTON: The Prime Minister’s Special Assistant on Foreign Affairs Tariq Fatemi has said that nuclear materials must never fall into the wrong hands and this is a global concern which Pakistan fully shares.

In his address at a dinner hosted by the US President Barack Obama in Washington where he arrived to attend the two-day Nuclear Security Summit, Tariq Fatemi said that Pakistan has an effective emergency response mechanism including a nuclear emergency management system to ensure security of nuclear materials.

Fatemi said that Pakistan’s emergency response mechanism includes a Nuclear Emergency Management System at the national level. He said that a Nuclear and Radiological Emergency Support Center and a Nuclear and Radiological Emergency Coordination Center run round the clock.

The special assistant further said that emergency preparedness and response constitutes effective deterrence against malicious acts and this requires significant training efforts including those by nuclear security centres developed by states.

Tariq Fatemi said that in the past six years, the Nuclear Security Summit process has contributed significantly to nuclear security. He said that valuable ground has been covered in strengthening nuclear security architecture worldwide through national actions and voluntary exchange of experience, expertise and best practices.

Moscow says it won’t allow US to silence UNSC on Israeli violence against Palestinians Monitoring Desk: Russian envoy in United Nations Vasily Nebenzya said that the UN Security Council should bring peace, stability and prosperity to the Middle East and Russia would not allow United States to silence UNSC over the issue of Gaza crisis. According to TASS news Agency, Nebenzya said that Moscow will continue to call for an end to violence against Palestinians and will not allow the US to muzzle the UN Security Council as Washington seeks to support Israel's operation in Gaza. "We will continue to stand firmly for ending violence against the Palestinians. Without a shadow of a doubt, we will continue to expose the abuses and sanctimony with which the US is handling the situation. We will not allow the Americans to gag the entire council with their hands in an effort to encourage further continuation of Israel's ruthless operation," he said in a speech at the Security Council.
