Scottish people ready to decide country’s future

LONDON: In a bid to determine the future of Scotland, a national referendum will be held in the country on Thursday (September 18).

The independence referendum could result in Scotland’s separation from the United Kingdom after more than 300 years of political union.

The voters will be asked on Thursday to answer “Yes” or “No” to the question: “Should Scotland be an independent country?”

All three surveys conducted in this regard as by the Britain-based ICM research foundation, Opinium and Survation showed support for independence at 48 percent compared with 52 percent backing for the union.

In a letter to the people of Scotland, the Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond appealed to voters to back independence. He told them that they will hold power in their hands as they vote to determine their country’s future on Thursday.

“The talking is nearly done. The campaigns will have had their say. What’s left is just us – the people who live and work here. The only people with a vote. The people who matter,” Salmond said.
