Kabul, Afghanistan: US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said that US strategy had been successful in Afghanistan and South Asia.

According to Afghanistan based Pajhwok, news agency, Mike Pompeo while addressing a joint press conference with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said that Taliban movement slowing down now.

Pompeo reached Kabul on Monday on his a week-long, around-the-world trip before he will attend NATO summit in Brussels later this week.

Pompeo said that US President Donald Trump strategy on Afghanistan was working and the Taliban movement was slowing.

He said that Trump administration supported the idea of peace talks with the Taliban and US would assist that effort as much as it could. Pompeo said that peace process in Afghanistan must be Afghan led and for Afghanistan.

US Secretary of State said that US assistance and cooperation in various fields with Afghanistan would continue.

He stated that US was in favour of Afghan-led peace process and ownership of the process must be with Afghan government.

While addressing press conference, President Ashraf Ghani said that Afghan-led peace process had the support all Afghans and that support was based on a consensus and consultation of the Afghan people.

President Ghani added that the ceasefire with the Taliban was also a successful process, but achieving peace required a lot of work and patience.

There is possibility that US Secretary of State may visit Islamabad to meet civil and military leadership of Pakistan to share his viewpoint about role of Pakistan during October 2018 Afghan parliamentary Elections.
