MOSCOW: At least 19 people were killed after a MI-8 helicopter carrying 25 passengers and 3 crew members crashed in Russia’s northern region of Yakutia, the local Interior Ministry said.

According to reports, the helicopter was flying from the village of Deputatsky to Kazachye village when the pilot lost control of the aircraft and crashed into a mountain.

Earlier reports suggested that the helicopter had crash landed 45 kilometers from Deputatsky.

The deputy minister of Yakutia, as well as emergency service workers, the staff of the Special Department of Russia’s Investigative Committee, and transport police are at the scene of the incident.
