19,272 suspects arrested across country: NAP implementation report

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The law enforcement agencies have arrested 19,272 suspected people in 19,789 operations conducted across the country, according to a latest report on the implementation of anti-terror national action plan (NAP) submitted to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

The report by the law enforcement agencies said that 11,634 operations were carried out in Punjab, 3,003 in Sindh, 3,733 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 57 in Balochistan and 68 in the federally administrated tribal areas (FATA).

It said that 2,497 people were arrested on misuse of loudspeaker.

The report said that 580 cases were registered for speeches based on religious hatred. It said that 5,066 Afghan refugees were repatriated to their country during the period.

In addition, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) registered 23 cases for remitting money through Hundi while 26 persons were arrested and Rs70 million recovered.

The report further said that the law enforcing agencies acted on 259 calls made on 1717 while biometric verification of 56.6 million SIMs was carried out through the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA).

The national plan of action against terrorism was adopted in the wake of the deadly terror attack that hit an army-run school in Peshawar on December 16, claiming lives of 150 persons mostly children.

The prime minister has asked the provincial governments to implement the NAP in its letter and spirit in order to eradicate the menace of terrorism and extremism from the country.
