Bangladesh parliament empowers itself to impeach apex court judges

DHAKA, Bangladesh: The Bangladesh Parliament on late Wednesday passed a constitutional amendment, empowering itself to impeach judges of the Supreme Court for misconduct and inability.

The 16thconstitutional amendment will come into effect after an official statement is published following the President`s approval.

The parliamentarians will be able to impeach any apex court judge for his or her misconduct or incapacity once the amendment comes into effect.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) of the former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has strongly criticized the Bangladesh Awami League government`s move to re-empower parliament to impeach the Supreme Court judges, describing it as a conspiracy.
