ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Sardar Ayaz Sadiq of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has been elected as the Speaker of National Assembly for the third time by garnering 199 votes.

While his opponent Malik Muhammad Amir Dogar of Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) received 91 votes.

The polling for the election of Speaker National Assembly was held at National Assembly Hall in Islamabad on Friday under the Chairmanship of the Outgoing Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf.

After the counting of votes was complete, the Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf said that a total of 291 votes were cast, out of which one was “invalid” and the rest declared “valid”.

After being elected as the National Assembly Speaker, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq greeted Malik Amir Dogar. He also shook hands with the other MNAs from the opposition including Latif Khosa.

Later Sardar Ayaz Sadiq was sworn-in as the Speaker of National Assembly. The Outgoing Speaker administered the oath to him.

In his speech, Malik Amir Dogar said that they contested the Speaker election without reserves seats but with a protest as they wanted to be part of the House to maintain its dignity.

Dogar said that he was a single party whereas Sardar Ayaz Sadiq had the backing of seven parties. He said that if elections results were announced as per Form-45, he would have received 225 votes in the House today.

Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah elected Deputy Speaker

In the election for the Office of Deputy Speaker, Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah of Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarians (PPPP) secured 197 votes whereas SIC’s Junaid Akbar grabbed 92 votes.
