ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah on Wednesday said the upcoming general elections would be a test for the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

Talking to media representatives in Islamabad, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) senior leader said after the 18th Constitutional amendment, the ECP had become more independent.

Khursheed Shah said senior people should be appointed as the Provincial Election Commissioners (PECs) immediately. He said doubts and misgivings would emerge if the Provincial Election Commissioners were not appointed.

The Opposition Leader further said it was the responsibility of the ECP to oversee Returning Officers (ROs).

The incumbent government’s tenure will expire on May 31 followed by an interim setup which would continue to perform administrative duties till a new government takes over as a result of a triumph in general elections.

The general elections are expected across the Country in July 2018.
