ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Friday made a firm commitment to ensure provision of quality health care for the people, and said the federal government would work with the Council of Common Interests (CCI) to develop a cohesive National Health Policy.

In his address at a ceremony to mark World Health Day in Islamabad, the prime minister said the government would also provide necessary resources for National Health Survey.

The prime minister said health was a provincial subject under the 18th Constitutional amendment but would not absolve the federal government of responsibility in the sector. He said the federal government was providing vision and direction in improving state of health in the Country.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said Prime Minister’s Health Programme was targeting poorest of the poor and there was need to expand the programme.

Khaqan Abbasi said the immunization programme had been strengthened and the Country was in the last stages of eradicating polio. He said tuberculosis (TB) was also being addressed through an aggressive programme.

The prime minister said besides quality health care, the government was also focusing on the issue of malnutrition, population programme and human resource development.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi pointed out that 6,000 qualified doctors produced by Pakistan were working in Latin America but the quality of healthcare in the Country had not reached at the desired level.
