PakistanSC adjourns hearing of Gilani’s intra-court appeal for three weeks

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) on Monday adjourned hearing of Former Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani’s appeal for three weeks.

An intra-court appeal was filed to the apex court by Gilani last week against his disqualification in the NRO implementation case.

A seven-member bench of the apex court had disqualified the former PM from holding any public office for five years over refusing to write a letter to Swiss authorities for reopening of cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.

The court decision and a 30-second symbolic sentence deprived the ex-PM of his office. However, the Swiss government later refused to reopen the money laundering cases.

Gilani, in his appeal, stated that the decision of not writing the letter was taken by him in the capacity of a Prime Minister whereas the court had sentenced him in personal capacity.

On Monday, the court observed that the former PM seeks review of court verdict pertaining to his disqualification, however, the bench has clarified that the appeal couldn’t be taken up unless the same sets aside his conviction.
