Pakistan strongly condemns bombings in Russian city of Volgograd

ISLAMABAD: The Foreign Office said on Tuesday that Pakistan strongly condemns the recent suicide attacks in the southern Russian city of Volgograd that left more than 30 people dead.

   

In a statement on Tuesday, Foreign Office spokesperson Tasnim Aslam said that Pakistan opposes terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.

The spokesperson extended condolences to the families of the victims and sympathize with all those injured in this barbaric act.

On Monday, at least 15 persons were killed and nearly two dozen others injured when a blast ripped through a trolleybus in the Russian city of Volgograd. It was the second blast in two days that rocked Volgograd city as on Sunday as well a deadly suicide bombing at the city’s main train station killed at least 17 persons and wounded 15 others.

Following the deadly bombings, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the counterterrorism agency to step up security across the country.

There have been no claims of responsibility for the two blasts but Russian police have detained dozens of people in sweeps through Volgograd.

On Tuesday, Regional police official Andrei Pilipchuk said that 87 people have been taken into custody in Volgograd after they either resisted police or could not produce proper identification or registration documents.

Police is focusing on migrant workers from the Caucasus and former Soviet states. However, there are yet no indications that any of the detainees were linked to the bombings or suspected of planning further attacks.
