North, South Korean families separated by war to hold reunions

SEOUL: The families which were separated by the 1950-53 Korean War have been allowed to hold brief reunions from February 20 to 25 at the Mount Kumgang resort on North Korea’s east coast.

An agreement was reached in this regard by South Korea and North Korea on Wednesday during a meeting at the Panmunjom border village, South Korea’s unification ministry said.

At previous reunions, about 100 families have been allowed to meet relatives on the other side for fleeting moments before they are sent back to their respective homes.

The rare agreement between the two countries came as North Korea did not link the reunions with its demand for the cancelation of the annual military exercises by the United States and South Korean militaries scheduled for this month.
