WASHINGTON, United States: The US President Barack Obama has expressed concern over fierce fighting between Israel and Hamas in Gaza and also offered his country’s help in negotiating a ceasefire to end escalating violence between the two sides.

More than 100 Palestinians including many women and children have been killed since Israel began an offensive against the Hamas in Gaza on Tuesday.

In a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Obama expressed concern about the risk of further escalation of fighting in the area and also called on both Israel and the Palestinians to protect civilians and restore calm.

“The president expressed concern about the risk of further escalation and emphasised the need for all sides to do everything they can to protect the lives of civilians and restore calm. But he also urged both sides not to escalate the crisis,” the White House said in a statement.
