BEIJING: The US Secretary of State John Kerry has admitted that the US-led invasion of Iraq eleven years ago was a serious mistake.

In an interview with Chinese news agency on Tuesday, Kerry said that the administration of the US President Barack Obama is still working through many of the problems associated with the war on Iraq.

Kerry also acknowledged that many problems in the Middle East today have their roots in that war.

His remarks came at a time when Iraq is fighting with the Sunni militants from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) that some observers and reports say are trained and armed by the US.

Over the past days, heavy clashes have been underway between Iraqi armed forces and the ISIL terrorists, who have threatened to spread their acts of violence to Baghdad and other Iraqi cities.
