Suspension of Lakhvi's detention order challenged in SC

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court of Pakistan, challenging the suspension of detention of Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi in Mumbai attack case.

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on December 29 suspended the notification of detention of Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, one of the main accused in the 26/11 Mumbai attack case.

In a petition filed with the Supreme Court on Thursday, the federal government held the stance that the High Court does not have powers to suspend the detention orders.

Lakhvi was granted bail by an anti-terrorism court in Islamabad on December 18 but he remained detained under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.

Later on December 26, Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi filed a petition in the IHC challenging his detention.

On December 20, the IHC judge Justice Noorul Haq Qureshi while hearing the case suspended Lakhvi’s detention ordered under the MPO.

Lakhvi was believed to be the operational head of the banned Laskhar-e-Taiba (LeT) at the time of the attacks which were carried out on November 26, 2008 in Mumbai.

The Indian government accused the LeT of carrying out the attacks in the country’s financial capital and which left 166 persons dead.
