GENEVA: The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Monday recommended strict travel restrictions on Pakistan, making it mandatory for Pakistani citizens to carry a polio vaccination certificate during foreign travel.
The 21-member independent International Health Regulations Emergency Committee formed on the recommendations of the WHO permanent executive board members, put forward recommendations for the travel restrictions.
The number of polio cases detected in Pakistan, which is among three countries where the crippling virus is endemic, during the current year has reached 59.
Earlier in the day, the WHO in an announcement described the ongoing polio outbreaks in Asia, Africa and the Middle East as an ”extraordinary” situation requiring a coordinated international response.
