ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Pakistan on Saturday while showing solidarity with the democratic government of Turkey condemned the coup attempt in which several people were killed.

On Friday fight, some sections of the Turkish army had declared a coup and martial law; however, thousands of people heeded President Tayyip Erdogan’s call in several cities and streamed into the streets and foiled the coup attempt.

“Pakistan condemns the attempt to undermine democracy and rule of law in Turkey,” said a statement released by the PM’s Media Office on Saturday.

The statement said that Pakistan stands by the people and the government of Turkey.

“We support the will of the people reflected in the democratic system and the democratically elected leadership of Turkey,” it said. “The Pakistani nation hopes that peace and normalcy will be restored in Turkey.”

At least 90 people were killed and 1,154 wounded when a faction of the Turkish armed forces attempted to seize power.

Likewise, 1,563 military personnel were arrested and 29 colonels and five generals were sacked following the coup attempt whereas nearly 200 unarmed soldiers at the Turkish military headquarters surrendered.

The Turkish Chief of Staff General Hulusi Akar was held hostage during the coup attempt but was later rescued during an operation at an air base in Ankara.

In his address to the nation, the Turkish President said that a conspiracy was hatched against the country and the democracy. He said it was a conspiracy against unity and solidarity of the country.

The Turkish president described the attempted coup as high treason and said the ring leader, who plotted all this, would have to pay the price in front of the nation.

Meanwhile, there has been international condemnation of the attempted coup in Turkey.

In a statement, the US President Barack Obama urged all parties in Turkey to support the democratically elected government of Turkey, show restraint and avoid violence and bloodshed.

The European leaders said that they fully support the Turkish government and called for a swift return to constitutional order in the country.

In a joint statement, the President of the European Council, European Commission and EU High Representative said that the European Union EU fully supports the Turkish democratically elected government and rule of law.
