Egypt’s interim PM announces resignation of his cabinet

CAIRO: Egyptian interim Prime Minister Hazem el-Beblawi announced on Monday that his cabinet has resigned, a move that is being considered as part of the efforts to pave the way for army chief Field Marshal Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to leave his defense minister’s post to run for president in election scheduled for mid-April.

“Today the cabinet took a decision to offer its resignation to the president of the republic,” Beblawi said in a televised statement on Monday.

According to the state-run al-Ahram news website report, the Egypt’s interim president Adly Mansour asked Beblawi to run the government’s affairs until a new prime minister was selected.

Beblawi’s military-backed government was sworn in on July 16, less than two weeks after Sissi ousted President Mohammed Morsi after a year in office.
