ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training (MoFEPT) and Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) signed a contract on Wednesday for broadcasting and development of distance learning content which also includes upgradation of facilities and capacities at AIOU.

This upgradation will enable AIOU to set up and operate four satellite educational TV Channels along with streaming of digital content through Internet.

The Minister of Federal Education & Professional Training Rana Tanveer Hussain was the Chief Guest at the occasion. The Federal Secretary-MOFEPT Aamir Ashraf Khawaja also attended the event.

The contract was signed by Additional Secretary (MOFEPT), Waseem Ajmal Chaudhary and Registrar-AIOU Major Raja Umer Younis.

The Chairman Higher Education Commission (HEC) Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed and Vice Chancellor AIOU Professor Dr. Zia-ul-Qayyum were also present at the occasion.

Through this initiative, the MoFEPT is endeavoring to strengthen and sustain Teleschool by enhancing the existing capacity of AIOU to develop and broadcast distance learning content.

The contract includes significant upgradation of facilities and capacities at AIOU to set up and operate 04 satellite TV channels including earth station up-linking equipment and play out server, upgrading studios & postproduction facilities, additional personnel and technical support.

During the ceremony, Rana Tanveer said, “The agreement with AIOU is a significant milestone for adoption of modern practices in the era of digitalization. Such steps will enable us to introduce contemporary techniques of learning in our education system. Also, these futuristic projects by the Government will ensure that our young generation gets access to the best facilities in the education sector. Moreover, we will ensure that a fast-paced implementation of this initiative takes place. We will also continue to carryout activities for betterment of our children. specially those who do not have access to physical education, which will lead to progress and prosperity of the country.”

Speaking at the occasion, the Additional Secretary MOFEPT Waseem Ajmal Chaudhary said “This initiative will develop a sustainable and technology-based system of distance learning in Pakistan. One of the highlights of the project is that it will enable MoFEPT to provide remote education not only to enrolled students but also to out of school children around the Country. With such innovative approach, this agreement is certainly going to pave the way for socio-economic development of the people of Pakistan”.

Sharing his views at the event, Professor Dr. Zia-ul-Qayyum said “AIOU is carrying out distance learning educational activities since 1974 and considered a benchmark in this field. We also have one of the biggest teachers’ training programmes. We are extremely grateful to MoFEPT and with their patronage we will make full utilization of the outreach already available to us.”

Senior officials from MOFEPT & AIOU also attended the ceremony.
