Middle EastChemical weapons used in Syria; UN inspectors report confirms

NEW YORK: Chemical weapons were used against civilians including children in an attack in the suburb of the Syrian capital last month, the UN inspectors have confirmed in the report handed over to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

The report which was presented by UN inspectors led by Swedish expert Ake Sellstrom and which is to be officially released later on Monday when the UN chief will present it to the Security Council says “environmental, chemical and medical” evidence suggests that surface-to-surface rockets containing the nerve agent sarin were used in the Gouta area of Damascus on August 21, killing hundreds of people.

However, it is not confirmed yet as who was responsible for the attacks, the President Bashar al-Assad’s regime or opposition rebels, as the UN inspectors were not empowered to investigate this.
