Number of polio cases in Pakistan rises to 231

PESHAWAR, Pakistan: The number of polio victims in the country during the current year has climbed to 231 after four new polio cases were confirmed by the polio virology laboratory of the national institute of health.

The new polio cases were reported from the volatile Khyber tribal region and Peshawar, according to an official of the national institute of health.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif wrote letters to all the chief ministers of the country, urging them to carry out steps for polio eradication.

The prime minister called on provincial governments to redouble their efforts for eradicating polio.

Nawaz urged them to immediately map out and identify high risk areas in their respective provinces, adopt specific interventions for each of them depending on their particular requirements
