ISLAMABAD: The Senate has unanimously passed the ‘Protection of Pakistan Bill 2014’ which provides for protection against waging of war against Pakistan and the prevention of acts threatening the security of the country.

The minister for science and technology Zahid Hamid moved the bill in the upper house on behalf of the interior minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan.

Later, speaking on the floor of the Senate, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) senator Mian Raza Rabbani admitted that the bill is a strict bill but the opposition parties support the government regarding its approval due to present law and order situation of the country.

The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) senator and the chairman Senate standing committee on interior Talha Mehmood said that the committee had passed the bill before moving it in the Senate.

Senator Talha Mehmood said that it was important for the government to assure the Senate that security forces will not misuse the bill at any cost. He said that the law should not be misused against seminary students and members of political parties.

The JUI-F senator further said that his party has concerns on many clauses of the bill but it will support the government for the protection of the state in this regard.

Without a shadow of a doubt, we will continue to expose the abuses and sanctimony with which the US is handling the situation. We will not allow the Americans to gag the entire council with their hands in an effort to encourage further continuation of Israel's ruthless operation," he said in a speech at the Security Council.
