Taliban threat compels Afghans to tighten security ahead of run-off election

KABUL: The Afghan government has tightened security after the Taliban issued a new warning for people to stay away from the country’s presidential run-off election to be held between Abdullah Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani on June 14, reports said on Thursday.

“We once again call upon the people not to participate, even inadvertently, in forthcoming election drama of June 14. If they do not follow the instructions and demands of the Islamic Emirate and do participate in the elections, they will be held responsible for all the unpleasant consequences,” the Afghan Taliban said in a statement on Wednesday.

The reports said that following the Taliban new threats, the security has been tightened in the war-torn country as the Afghan police and soldiers are manning checkpoints at almost every intersection, searching vehicles and banning trucks from the streets.

The Afghanistan’s presidential election came to a run-off poll after none of the competing candidates secured more than 50 percent of the total number of votes cast during the first round held on April 5, as required under the Constitution to win the election.
