PoliticsFederal govt ready for electoral reforms, says Nisar

ISLAMABAD: The federal minister for interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said on Thursday that the federal government is ready to sit with the opposition to bring electoral reforms.

In his address in the National Assembly on Thursday, the interior minister said that the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) before general elections was carried out in consultations with parties inside and outside the parliament.

The interior minister said that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was in the forefront to propose the name of Fakhruddin G. Ibrahim for the slot of the CEC.

Nisar assured that the Islamabad administration would extend full cooperation to the PTI to hold its rally against alleged rigging in the general election held last year on Sunday.

“We have no objections to the democratic and political rights of protest in a peaceful manner,” the minister said. However, he said, that there should be a modus operandi for the protest. He said that we need to sit together and determine a place of protest in Islamabad.

Earlier, the PTI chief Imran Khan requested the government not to create any hurdle in their way to stage the protest on Sunday as it is their democratic right.

Imran rejected the impression that his party wants to derail the democratic process. He said that demanding transparent and free elections actually helps strengthen democracy.
