Musharraf suffers heart problem on way to special court, moved to AFIC

ISLAMABAD: Former military ruler General (retd) Pervez Musharraf was shifted to the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology (AFIC) in Rawalpindi for medical treatment after he suffered heart problem on his way to the special court to appear before it for the treason case on Thursday, media reports said.

Meanwhile, the special court reserved the judgment on today’s proceedings in the treason case, and would announce the verdict at 4pm today.

Earlier, a three-member special court headed by Justice Faisal Arab and comprising Justice Tahira Safdar and Justice Yawar Ali constituted for the high treason trial of Pervez Musharraf resumed the hearing of the case and ordered the former military ruler to appear in court before 11:30 and warned that warrants for his arrest would be issued in case of failure to comply with the court’s orders.

Following the court’s order, the former president left his Chak Shahzad farmhouse residence to appear before the special court. However, the squad rushed him to the AIFC after health of Pervez Musharraf deteriorated.

In his argument before the court‚ the special prosecutor Akram Sheikh alleged that Pervez Musharraf has been admitted to the hospital to avoid appearance in the court‚ and the court should take notice of it.

The special prosecutor requested the special court to issue non-bailable arrest warrants against Musharraf.

Khalid Ranjha, the counsel of Musharraf‚ told the court that his client was on his way to court when he had to be shifted to the AFIC due to cardiac pain.

Musharraf is facing treason charges under article 6 for suspending, subverting and abrogating the constitution, imposing an emergency in the country on November 3, 2007 and detaining judges of the superior courts.

It is the first time in Pakistan’s history that a former military ruler has been put on trial for treason.
