LHC rules against delimitation of constituencies in Punjab

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday gave its ruling on petitions relating to delimitation of constituencies in Punjab province and declared the delimitation of constituencies in the province unlawful.

A full bench of the LHC in its short order directed the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to formulate new regulations for delimitation.

The bench directed the ECP that delimitation be carried out in accordance with the country’s constitution and laws.

Meanwhile, in response to the court’s ruling, provincial minister Rana Sanaullah said the Punjab government has accepted the court’s verdict, adding that it will not be approaching the Supreme Court in this regard.

The provincial minister said that fresh delimitation will be started in light of the LHC order but added that for improved delimitation, a fresh census is a constitutional necessity.

Rana Sanaullah further said that fresh delimitation in the province will require at least 5 to 6 months of time which means that holding bodies elections in Punjab on January 30 will not be possible.
