PoliticsLetter sent to SC seeking to initiate treason case against Musharraf

ISLAMABAD: The law ministry on Monday sent a letter to the Supreme Court of Pakistan seeking the initiation of a treason case against former military ruler Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf.

Moreover, the federal government announced advocate Zulfiqar Abbas Naqvi as the special prosecutor in the treason case to be initiated against Musharraf.

The letter, the law ministry earlier received from the interior ministry, requests the setting-up of a tribunal of three high court judges to start proceedings against Musharraf for treason under article 6 of the constitution.

The move came a day after Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan announced that the government will try the former military ruler for treason for imposing emergency rule in 2007.

Separately, the Sindh High Court adjourned the hearing of Musharraf’s petition seeking removal of name from the Exit Control List (ECL) until November 22.

In his petition, Musharraf had requested the court to remove his from the ECL as he was granted in all pending cases against him and now wanted to visit his ailing mother outside the country.
