LONDON: The US National Security Agency (NSA) has monitored the telephone conversations of 35 foreign leaders, a new document leaked by former US intelligence contractor Edward Snowden reveals.

The NSA was shared the contact information pertaining to world leaders by the officials from the White House, the US Department of Defense, and the State Department, a UK-based newspaper reported.

The newspaper said that an unnamed US official supplied the NSA with over 200 numbers including 35 belonging to world leaders.

The new revelation came a day after Germany summoned US ambassador and sought clarification over claims that the United States may have monitored the mobile phone of Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Prior to that, Merkel called US President Barack Obama over her government’s suspicions the US spy agency could have been spying on Merkel’s phone calls, while Obama assured Merkel that his country is not monitoring her communications.
