NEW YORK: Pakistan and India have agreed to ensure ceasefire across the Line of Control (LoC).

The consensus was evolved at a meeting between Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh in New York on Sunday.

In a statement after the meeting‚ Foreign Secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani said the Pakistan and India agreed to establish a mechanism for not only investigating such unfortunate incidents but also to ensure that there is no recurrence of such happenings.

He said the two Prime Minister tasked the Director General Military Operations to hold a meeting and work out a mechanism for implementation of ceasefire along the Line of Control.

Jalil Abbas said the two leaders had an extremely positive meeting during which they expressed both their willingness and commitment to improve bilateral relations.

He said Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif called for resolution of all outstanding issues‚ including Jammu and Kashmir dispute‚ foreign interference in Balochistan‚ Siachen‚ Sir Creek and water issues.

The Foreign Secretary said the meeting aimed at creating a positive environment‚ conducive to pushing peace in South Asia.

Indian National Security Advisor Shivshankar Menon described the meeting as constructive and useful and said that both sides expressed the desire to resolve their all outstanding issues through broader dialogue.

Menon said the two Prime Ministers invited each other to visit their countries.
