GILGIT: Authorities on Thursday arrested two suspected terrorists including the mastermind of an attack on foreign mountaineers in Chilas valley in June.

Chief Secretary Gilgit-Baltistan Younus Dhaga the mastermind of an attack on foreign tourists along with his accomplice have been arrested. The mastermind has been identified as Qaribullah alias Hasan, who is also the former head of the defunct Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan.

He said police have also arrested Muhammad Nabi alias Qari Hussain who allegedly involved in the killing of Colonel Mustofa, Captain Ashfaque and DPO Diamer Hilal Khan.

In June, a group of gunmen dressed as paramilitary police stormed a base camp for the 8,125-meter snow-covered Nanga Parbat peak, the ninth-highest mountain in the world. They shot dead five Ukrainians, one Russian, two Chinese mountaineers, one Chinese American and one Pakistani guide.
