PESHAWAR: Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf (PTI) leader Asad Qaisar was sworn in as 17th speaker Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly after he and Imtaiz Shahid Qureshi were elected unopposed as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa assembly’s speaker and deputy speaker respectively on Thursday.

The outgoing speaker Kiramatullah Khan administered oath to the new speaker of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa assembly.

Moreover, PTI’s Pervez Khattak submitted his nomination papers for the post of provincial chief minister.

The opposition in the house led by Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) withdrew its candidates for the two slots, paving the way of PTI-nominees’ unopposed victory.

The session of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly begun on Thursday morning with outgoing Speaker in chair, to elect new Speakers and Deputy Speakers of the house.

PTI had nominated Asad Qaiser for the office of Speaker and Imtiaz Qureshi for Deputy Speaker, whereas JUI-F had named Munawar Khan for Speaker.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) had fielded Arbab Akbar Hayat for the slot of Deputy Speaker.

In the province, PTI won the highest number of seats — 35 —in the May 11 general elections. Moreover, the JUI-F announced it would sit on KP’s opposition benches.

Earlier, PTI, Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) and Qaumi Watan Party (QWP) had finalised a formula over the formation of a coalition government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, according to which JI and QWP are to get three ministries each, whereas, PTI would hold the positions of chief minister and speaker in the province.
