KABUL, Afghanistan: As many as 45 soldiers and policemen were killed when the Taliban attacked stormed a military base in the Country’s northern Baghlan province on early Wednesday.
Taliban are intensifying attacks from West to East and from North to South, and are engaging Afghan forces and NATO allies at different war zone after playing havoc with Ghazni province. Kabul–Kandahar Highway was closed down for all kind of traffic last night as the area is considered unsafe for commuting.
Military sources said that the attack place on the Afghan National Army base in Markazi area of Baghlan. They said that the attack left 35 servicemen and 10 local police officers dead.
No one immediately admitted to be behind the attack.
Earlier on Monday in northern Faryab province, the Afghan military surrendered to the Taliban who had surrounded their base. The base was under siege for 48 hours. As per estimates of local officials, more than 40 members of the security forces surrendered to the Taliban after they did not receive any assistance or additional ammunition despite repeated requests.
The Afghan Taliban are engaging with Afghan forces at several places before coming holidays of Eid-ul-Azha (religious festivity of Muslims) which will be celebrated on August 21 in Afghanistan.
The situation indicates that dialogue of Taliban with the US authorities in Doha, Qatar, was not successful and the United States is not ready to withdraw its forces from Afghanistan to initiate the peace process.
